It sucks when someone who you dreamed about being close with (once in a romantic way, now just in the way that you want to shake him and tell him how much goddamn POTENTIAL he has that he doesn’t see) tells you that he’s moving to the Midwest in a month.  He’s going to live in the middle of a cornfield, in someone else’s farmhouse, because he’s “had a strong desire to be alone for a long time.”  He’s going to be lonely, so you should come visit him at that farmhouse.

If only that offer really meant anything.

You tell him that you like his African print shorts at the exact same time that he tells you that he likes your men’s-size-large Hawaiian print shirt.  ”Maybe we should trade,” he says.  You both laugh.

If only that offer really meant anything.

You think about that time after you stopped like-liking him– when you danced together with a group of friends, and you whispered in his ear, “I think that you’re a very unique and special person.”  You really meant it, but he didn’t believe it.  Or maybe he just didn’t care.

You two were always too much alike, but too different, too.
